To the East of the core along the Waterfront is historic Gastown, the original major settlement. Here there are some great East Indian restaurants and many interesting shops and buildings. A little further East is our Chinatown. Vancouver has the greatest number of Asian residents per capita in North America and a short trip to Chinatown for a bowl of Won-Ton soup is almost a necessity. Be extra careful in the Chinatown area and getting there and back as just to the North is the derelict hotel and homeless neighborhood referred to as the Downtown Eastside. All other areas are very safe and above North American standards even after dark.Although there are some major incidents our crime rate remains one of the lowest on the continent.
